The Demopolis City Council voted Thursday to clarify an issue with vacation days and when they are calculated.

A recent issue brought up by an employee was discussed during the work session before Thursday’s meeting. The employee had lost vacation days by the way they were calculated, leaving city officials needing to clarify the matter.

“We are doing it one way and it’s written incorrectly in our personnel manual,” Mayor Woody Collins said. “What we try to do is as people are approaching their date to accrue more vacation for them to take two weeks off before they get their new two weeks.”

The council approved clarifying the issue and looking into a way to have employees “anniversary” dates printed on their checks so they can more easily know when the accrual time is coming.

In other action from the meeting, the council:

  • Approved two speed bumps in the Southmont Drive area after a citizen presented a a request and signed petitions for the move. The citizen had asked for three speed bumps, but the council approved two, adding another could be placed if needed.
  • Heard an update on possible grant funding from Friends of the Old School. Several grants are being applied for and the group is seeking nonprofit status.
