The Demopolis Tigers’ season came to a close Friday night as UMS-Wright escaped with a 21-7 win in the first round of the playoffs.

The Tigers will end the season with a 7-4 record while winning the region championship.

Demopolis opened the game with a good drive, but it stalled after a pair of false start penalties allowed the Bulldogs to force a stop on fourth down.

After a punt, Jake Bumgarner hit D’Qarius Banks for a nearly 40-yard pass to move the gall into Bulldog territory.

A pass interference penalty gave the Tigers new life inside the 30-yard line. Keishawn Rowser then scored from 28 yards out on the next play. Jose Telllez nailed the extra point to give Demopolis a 7-0 lead.

Things looked promising again after Jamarcus Vawters picked off a UMS-Wright pass, but disaster struck soon after. A Bulldog rushing the passer deflected a pass into the air, caught it and returned it for a 50-yard touchdown. The extra point tied the game at the 10:14 mark of the second quarter.

UMS-Wright used its two-minute offense to take at 14-7 lead at halftime.

Late in the third quarter, UMS-Wright ran the double-pass trick play to score a touchdown on third-and-14 from the Demopolis 20 to take a 21-7 lead.

The Tigers tried to cut into the lead in the fourth quarter, but they were turned away on fourth down. The Bulldogs put together a time-consuming drive to eat up most of the remaining time to clinch the victory.
