Dear Editor,
As a proud resident of Marengo County, I’m writing to express my strong support for the continuation of the levy of a special 5 mill school tax in school District 2 (Demopolis City) in Marengo County as part of the General Election on November 5th.
This is not a new tax but a tax that has been in place for the past 30 years. This 5 mill tax renewal has been essential for improving the quality of our schools by funding additional teachers, classroom resources, athletics, arts, deferred and routine facility maintenance, and many other necessities that are not supported by the Alabama State Department of Education.
Demopolis City Schools has traditionally performed over and above in the form of state scores in reading, science and math, even during the COVID pandemic, and continues to receive accolades throughout the state. They were recently recognized as one of only two districts to receive Alabama’s 2024 “Spotlight District for Science of Reading” Award. DCS is truly a “spotlight” in the Black Belt, demonstrating growth in data for proficiency that exceeds the state average. Demopolis City Schools has exemplified a commitment to student- centered coaching, enabling students to excel in the classroom and ensuring every child an opportunity to receive a quality education. This is evident in the fact that this district draws students from many surrounding areas who desire to earn their diploma from Demopolis City Schools. These accomplishments come from the hard work of teachers and administrators who have a heart to educate the complete student, preparing him/her for life ahead, whether it be
college, military or trade.
Knowing that our schools are a critically important factor in promoting economic development, vitality and the image of our city, now is the time for ALL to partner with our schools and become “stakeholders” in the lifeblood of Demopolis. Let’s continue to build on the progress we’ve made. I encourage all Demopolis residents to vote “Yes” for the renewal of the 5 mill school tax.
