The Demopolis Tigers are headed to the state volleyball tournament for the first time in program history, having punched their ticket Thursday to the Elite Eight at the South Super Regionals in Montgomery.
The ladies took out Headland in five sets in their first match and, following a break of nearly eight hours, including a three-hour delay, beat Elmore County in three sets.
Demopolis was swept out of the seeding round Friday by UMS-Wright Prep and Montgomery Catholic in straight sets. The Tigers, who enter the state tournament in Birmingham as a four-seed, are the only public school to come out of the 5A South Region.
According to MaxPreps, Demopolis volleyball is ranked No. 17 in Class 5A, and their first game Wednesday in the chase for a title will be against No.2 Arab, the top seed from the 5A North Regional.
