Sydney Woods Chasteen of Newbern went to be with Jesus Aug. 13, at the age of 71. She was born May 4, 1953, the youngest of three children to David and Bobbie Woods.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, G.B. Woods.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Richard Chasteen Sr.; sons, Allen (Melina) Chasteen of Woodbury, Minnesota, Brooks (Mary Kathryn) Chasteen of Tuscaloosa; grandson, Andrew Chasteen of Woodbury, Minnesota; sister, Jean (Byron) Watson of Newbern; sister-in-law, Judy T. Woods of Newbern; nephews, David Watson, Wells Watson and Terry Woods; niece, Christie Wilborn and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.

Mrs. Chasteen was a long-time, beloved teacher at Southern Academy (her high school alma mater) in Greensboro and at Demopolis High School in Demopolis. She graduated Judson College in Marion and enthusiastically taught secondary English and Spanish and was a finalist for the Alabama Teacher of the Year. Her love of teaching, positive outlook and warm personality inspired students and adults alike. She also enjoyed traveling, gardening and community functions.

She was a member and teacher of the Newbern Union Sunday School, and she and her husband attended the Newbern church services as well as Greensboro Baptist Church.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 17 at the Newbern Cemetery behind the Newbern Presbyterian Church on Alabama Highway 61. The Rev. Dee McGuire will officiate with Kirk Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
