The Marengo County Historical Society is grateful to announce the completion of a grant awarded by the ALA-TOM RC&D Council for the development of a Master Plan for the adaptive re-use of the iconic 1939 “tin tub” style water tower on the banks of the Tombigbee River.

This historic tower, which has long been a defining structure, will be transformed into an outdoor, multi-use facility designed to serve the community and visitors. The Master Plan lays the groundwork for an innovative space that accommodates community gatherings and acts as a welcoming beacon for locals and visitors.

Preliminary design renderings and cost estimates are included in this Master Plan, paving the way for a comprehensive vision that honors the water tower’s history while infusing modern functionalities. A Master Plan is necessary in determining the design of the project, that it meets ADA Standards for Accessible Design, the proposed scope of work, and preschematic design estimates of probable construction costs. Through collaboration with local residents and creative professionals, the plan aims to enhance the tower as a vibrant hub that fosters connection, celebration, and an appreciation for all.

For 84 years the water tower not only served to provide water for the community, but also as a marker for visitors and citizens as they entered the city from the north via State Highway 43 and to those utilizing the river and adjacent public boat landing. The tower has become a monument distinct to Demopolis’ riverfront, thus creating a specific and unique sense of place.

“Thanks to the support of ALA-TOM RC&D Council, we are one step closer to realizing a vision that combines functionality, history, and creativity in one iconic location,” said Kirk Brooker, Operations Director of the Marengo County Historical Society. This plan will be used to seek further funding for construction costs through fundraising campaigns/events and grant opportunities. Stay tuned for updates as this transformative journey continues.
