Sarah Helms, a student from Demopolis High School, attended the Huntingdon College Economic and Community Development Scholars Program on the Huntingdon College campus in Montgomery on July 15-16.
This is the fifth year of the program, hosted by the Huntingdon College Presidential Scholars Program, the Chamber of Commerce Association of Alabama and President Anthony Leigh.
Helms was one of 25 outstanding high school seniors from across Alabama who were nominated by their local Chamber of Commerce to attend the immersive two-day experience. Helms was the representative of the Demopolis Area Chamber of Commerce.
The students had the opportunity to learn from guest speakers about economic development and put their education into practice as they simulated promoting a city in Alabama to a prospective corporation. After the final presentations, the winning group of five students were front and center for a groundbreaking and ribbon cutting ceremony.
Helms was a part of the winning team.
The program was designed to foster the next generation of leaders in economic and community development. Participants engaged with state leaders, development officials, and young professionals over the two-day event.
Helms, who is a rising Senior at Demopolis High School, has demonstrated remarkable leadership and commitment to her community, according to Monica King, director of DACC.
“Over the past year, she has served as a DACC Junior Ambassador, was awarded the 2023 Youth volunteer of the Year and continues to serve her community by working with the COTR Day Parade,” King said in a press release. “We are super proud of Sarah and excited to see her represent our community at such prestigious event!”
Helms is the daughter of Kelly and Jennifer Helms.
