Joel Austin Coley, 87, of Demopolis passed away on July 2, 2024. Born on March 28, 1937, in Montgomery, he was the son of the late Margie Smith and Woodrow Coley. 

Joel shared 30 wonderful years with his beloved wife, Barbara Reeves Coley until her passing. Together they raised two sons, Joey (Emilly) Coley and Scott (Marsha) Coley (Deceased). Joel is survived by his dear wife, Myrle Smith Coley; son, Joey Austin Coley (Emilly) of Forkland; granddaughter, Brooke Coley Barkley (Keith); and Grandson, Ridge Barkley. Joel was deeply loved by the family of Myrle Smith Coley and is survived by stepdaughters, Carolyn Crenshaw (Bobby) and Kathy Long (Harold), and their families.

Joel honorably served in the Marine Corps from 1956 to 1959, he continued his service as an Army reservist and Alabama National Guard Soldier, retiring at the rank of Captain in 1997.

Joel embarked on a diverse career path. He built bridges and constructed buildings throughout Alabama; he was a member of Alabama Iron Workers Local #92 and took pride in pointing out his accomplishments on many trips to Tuscaloosa and Birmingham. Later, he joined the postal Service and was known for a winning smile and warm personality by the people of Demopolis. During his spare time, he owned and operated Coley well drilling and repair service, Joel never hesitated to respond to those needing well repairs and understood impacts on those on fixed budget

His mornings were cherished moments, often starting with a cup of coffee, and he was known to entertain family and friends with cookouts and was known for his fudge and home-made vanilla. Above all, Joel adored spoiling his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were the light of his life.
A service to celebrate Joel’s life was held at Forkland United Methodist Church, on Saturday, July 6, 2024. Following a delightful lunch, provided by the ladies of Forkland Methodist Church, the Rev. Nick Nicholson officiated the service honoring Joel’s life. Joel was interred at Demopolis Memorial Gardens.
The funeral arrangements were handled by Kirk Funeral Home, Demopolis.
