Freedom on the River saw a big crowd show up for the annual event, featuring music, children’s parade and a fireworks display.
Demopolis Chamber of Commerce director Monica King said she was pleased with the turnout. She estimated that there were between 700 and 800 people attending at the City Landing with more watching from boats and other parts of the city.
“I was excited to see families and friends enjoying the Freedom on the River festivities,” King said. “I felt it was a fantastic turnout.”
Freedom on the River began with food vendors opening up. Children and youth enjoyed water slides and foam machines, along with some small craft stations themed for the Fourth of July.
White Bluff Association performed throughout the night. During one of of their intermissions, the chamber conducted its Children’s Parade with about 15 entries. The parade featured a number of children riding in floats, bikes, battery-powered cars and wagons wagons and other floats decorated for the patriotic event.
Then, the fireworks show ended the night after the sunset as people piled into the grassy spaces at the City Landing, and boats filled the Black Warrior River to watch the show.
King said the event would not have been a success without the assistance of the city. The police escorted the children’s parade and provided traffic control around the landing.
“I would like to give special thanks to the Demopolis Police Department and the City of Demopolis for helping us put on the event,” King said.
The fun continues through the month of July with the Rockin’ on the River Summer Concert Series every Thursday at the City Landing. Entertainment starts at 6 p.m. Food trucks open at 5 p.m.
