Demopolis City Schools Foundation partners with teachers, community to further classroom learning

Teachers and students at Demopolis City Schools were surprised last week with the announcement of grants for the spring semester.
A total of $5,586.28 was awarded to be used in the Demopolis City School System: Westside Elementary School, US Jones Elementary, and Demopolis Middle School (DMS).
“Presenting the grant awards is the best time of year for the foundation,” said Margaret Anne Gilchrist, executive director. “The teachers across our school system are continuously researching ways to encourage excellence (our mission) in the classroom. Thank you to our grants committee for all of their hard work in reviewing our applications.”
Gilchrist expressed her gratitude for the partnerships that made the grants possible.
“We are thankful to be partnering with teachers and the community to further classroom learning in our schools for 30 years now,” Gilchrist said. “We appreciate the continued support of our donors and the Demopolis community; without them, the classroom grants program would not be possible. Through the foundation grants, our students are gaining access to unique learning experiences and modern technology.”
The complete list of 2024 spring classroom grants includes:
Westside Elementary
- Molly Malone was granted $2,018.94 for multisensory materials to address needs of students who benefit from small group instruction;
- Lana Little was granted $875.40 for Mirror My Sounds Phoneme Sets;
- Katelyn Thomaston was granted $500 for hands-on mathematics and literacy intervention materials; and
- Laurice Thomasson/Becky Holley was granted $1,190 for art supplies at Westside.
US Jones Elementary
- Kim Davis was granted $414.96 for Boardmaker 7- a picture communication symbols (PCS) program for the special ed self-contained classrooms.
Demopolis Middle School
- Aubrey McElroy was granted $486.98 for a weather station for science classes at DMS
- Braswell Braswell/DMS History Department was granted $100 for Civil Rights traveling backpacks to be used in the history department at DMS.
