Demopolis, Linden and Marengo County schools kicked off their civic education programs with a visit from Libby Liberty on Feb. 20.

Through an initiative of the Liberty Learning Foundation, Great American Tours brought Libby Liberty to Sweet Water High School for a program for Linden, Sweet Water and Amelia L Johnson elementary schools second and third graders. The tour launched the Super Citizen Program for 2024 and students waved flags, wore Statue of Liberty crowns and counted down for Libby to take the stage.

That afternoon Westside second graders and US Jones fifth graders came together at US Jones
Elementary School to kick off the program, experiencing the lady in green and learning about their civic responsibilities.

Three big screens previewed Libby live arrival at the school, followed by her entry onstage and a living history introduction for students to the 10-week civic, character, financial literacy and social studies program they begin after the tour.

During the presentation, Libby told students about the importance they have as world citizens.

Multiple grades at the school take part in the Super Citizen Program, with younger grades learning from Mr. Palmer, a hand puppet host of the “Hands on Liberty” DVD series. 

Upper elementary students learn from the Super Citizen Program kit DVD-based lessons, classroom activities and “Torch Teams” project experience. Torch Teams foster an understanding of the democratic election process, teaming students who nominate, vote for and then honor local heroes and learn that “When you honor a hero, you become a hero.”

The program is made possible through sponsorship from partners including Alabama Department of Education, AlaTrade Foods, Alfa, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama, Regions Bank, Screentech, International Paper – Pine Hill, Community Foundation of West Alabama, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5377 (VFW), City of Demopolis and ALA-TOM RC&D Council.
