The Demopolis City Council has declared an emergency closure of a portion of East Washington Street due to a small sinkhole on the side of the road. A resident who was walking on the street saw the sinkhole and reported it to the public works department.
“It’s just like the sinkholes you see on TV, but smaller. We can’t drive on the street right now. It’s not safe,” said Demopolis Mayor Woody Collins.
Public Works Director Ashford Jackson said that there are two pipes under the road and one of them has rusted out, leading to excessive water beneath the road. Jackson has already gotten some quotes from contractors and the estimated cost of repairs is between $70,000 to $75,000. Collins said the prices may vary depending on the cost of materials.
The Finance Committee will determine where the funding will come from and report to the council at the Mar. 7 meeting.
