The Demopolis Tigers put up a valiant fight against the Eufaula Tigers, but came up short losing 20-17. The Demopolis Tigers had the momentum throughout most of the game, but a safety by Eufaula changed the flow of the game.
DHS Coach Lance Tucker said that in playoff games teams have to win it on offense, defense, and special teams.
“I’m super proud of our kids’ efforts,” Tucker said. “We didn’t play our best game, but the way Eufaula played had a lot to do with that. Our kids gave it everything they had, and we just came up a bit short this time.”
The game was a low scoring one, with the teams heading into halftime tied at 7-7.
Neither team got on the board until the second quarter when Keishawn Rowser took it in on a 17-yard run with 10:21 left in the quarter. The PAT kick from Jose Tellez was good, making the score 7-0.
Eufaula responded a few minutes later with a 26-yard touchdown run by Marquia Harris with 8:00 left to play in the first half. The extra point kick was good, and the game was tied at 7-7.
The second score of the evening came midway through the third quarter. Unable to get the ball into the end zone, the Demopolis Tigers went for a field goal to up the score to 10-7 with 7:00 to go in the third quarter.
During the fourth quarter things turned south for Demopolis. A Eufaula safety at the 10:00 minute mark brought the visiting Tigers within one point at a 10-9 score.
Eufaula put another touchdown on the board with 9:17 left on the game clock. Quarterback Browning Anderson completed a 5-yard pass to Lekeveyunate Pugh to go up 17-10. The two point conversion was good, and the visiting Tigers took the lead for the first time.
Demopolis responded with 72-yard touchdown run by Rowser with 7:19 to go in the game. Tellez’s extra point kick was good, and the two Tiger teams were tied again at 17-17.
However, a Demopolis fumble at their own 11-yard line gave Eufaula the chance they needed to win the game. While the visiting Tigers didn’t get into the end zone, they kicked a field goal to take a 20-17 lead with 1:10 left in the game. Eufaula then sealed their victory with an interception and ran out the remainder of the time on the clock, making the final score 20-17.
Demopolis finished the season with a 10-3 record.
