Demopolis BOE approves short agenda, holds student hearings

The Demopolis City Board of Education met in a called meeting on Aug. 31 for the purpose of a student hearing and to approve items on a short agenda on Aug. 31 at the Central Office in Demopolis.
All five Board members present for the meeting, along with Board Attorney Braswell.
The board unanimously approved the agenda as presented, with an addition of approving an increase in CSFO Nelson’s contract.
A motion by Bobby Armstead to approve an agreement for engineering and architectural designs from Ward Scott Morris Architecture, Inc. for Emergency DHS Fire Alarm Replacement in the amount of $24,600.00 was also unanimously approved.
The board also made a motion to approve travel for the superintendent to a Cohort II of Superintendents “Leading Now” Conference, Sept 20-22, in Boston, MA.
Upon recommendation from the superintendent, the Paper Bid was awarded to Newell Paper Co. in the amount of $28,481.40.
The board voted to approve an increase for CSFO Nelson’s contract, then went into executive session for a student hearing. The board reconvened the open session with the following action being taken.
As a result of a due process hearing, a male DHS student, escorted into the hearing by two officers, was also accompanied by both grandparents, along with representation by state-appointed Attorney Steiner. No action was taken by the Board. The student requested to be immediately withdrawn from Demopolis High School.
