Surgical Technicians usually work in hospitals, day surgery clinics, and other healthcare settings. Under direct supervision, the surgical technicians are members of the operating room team that most commonly includes surgeons, anesthesiologists, and circulating nurses.
Surgical Technologists are significant participants on the health care team and play a major role in the operating room arena. The Surgical Technology program at Wallace Community College aims to provide classroom, laboratory, and clinical instruction to enable individuals to perform as competent, entry-level Surgical Technologists following graduation.
The 70-hour course will cover the surgical technician’s role beginning from pre-op preparation, during the operative procedure and will finish with postoperative room breakdown. Before an operation, surgical technicians help prepare the operating room by setting up surgical instruments and equipment, sterile drapes, and sterile solutions.
The course will cover the history of surgery and role of the surgical technician, introduction to the operating room, policies and guidelines, introduction to patient preparation or black table set up, and surgical asepsis and sterilization techniques.
Detailed course topics include discussions such as ethical and legal issues of surgical tech, understanding the scope of practice, risk management and liability issues, practice of safe patient care and safe surgical practices, and other topics.
