The annual Back-to-School sales tax holiday begins next Friday, July 21 at 12:01 a.m. and goes until midnight on Sunday, July 23. This year marks 18 years since the holiday was enacted in 2006. This event gives shoppers the opportunity to purchase certain school supplies, computers, and clothing free of state sales tax.
The three-day sale was created to give shoppers a temporary break from taxes on school supplies their children need for the new school year.
Marengo County is among the numerous counties and municipalities that participates in the holiday every year.
Exempt items include clothes with sales prices of $100 or less per item, computer equipment with prices of $750 or less per item, and noncommercial purchases on school supplies, school instructional materials, or school art supplies up to $50 per item.
Surrounding counties participating as of June 15 include Sumter County, Dallas County, Clarke County, Wilcox County, Perry County, and Choctaw County.
For a complete list of tax-exempt and taxable items please review the “Quick Reference Sheet of Exempt Items” at https://www.revenue.alabama.gov/sales-use/sales-tax-holidays.
