Statewide initiative expected to synergize STEM efforts to provide career opportunities

LIVINGSTON, Alabama—University of West Alabama President Ken Tucker has been appointed by Governor Kay Ivey to the Alabama STEM Council, which will advise state leadership on ways to improve STEM-related education, career awareness and workforce development opportunities across the state.

The Alabama STEM Council, which was signed into order on September 21, is charged with ensuring that Alabama’s future leaders have the opportunity to learn science, technology, engineering and mathematics skills that will help them transition into successful career pathways upon graduation.

“I am delighted to represent UWA in this collaboration as we look to create positive synergy that will link together many initiatives and form a network that will continue to move our state forward,” Tucker said. “This council has the potential to truly align K-12, community colleges, universities, and industry in a way that strengthens students throughout their lives to make a meaningful and lasting impact on society. I look forward to serving and learning as part of this group.”

Tucker also is representing the Alabama Council of College and University Presidents as its chair on the STEM council, serving alongside just over 40 of the state’s leaders in education, business and workforce development. This statewide council’s establishment comes at the recommendation of the Governor’s Advisory Council on Excellence in STEM.

The efforts of the Alabama STEM Council will likely serve as a model for STEM education programs, integrating the efforts of various levels of education and career opportunities.

“I am grateful that Governor Ivey and our state’s leadership continue to proactively seek opportunities for young people who will carry forward the excellence and innovation that has gained so much momentum for Alabama,” Tucker said.
