A heat wave expected to challenge longtime temperature records will grip the Southeastern United States this weekend, leading into Memorial Day.
Temperatures approaching the triple-digit mark are forecast for areas from Alabama and Tennessee to Georgia and the Carolinas, as well as central and northern Florida and parts of Virginia.
May temperatures have already been 5-10 degrees warmer for many of these areas through the month of May and the heat will likely peak on Sunday when the temperature in Demopolis is expected to be about 98 degrees. Montgomery is expected to challenge, or break, record highs that have stood since the 1910s.
Temperature forecast for Demopolis include: Friday, 95; Saturday, 95; Sunday, 98; Monday, 98; and Tuesday, 96. Humidity ranges from 45 to 55 percent during that time frame.
With many celebrating the Memorial Day weekend, it is advised to wear light-colored clothing, hats, sunglasses, sunscreen and to drink plenty of water when outdoors. Do not leave children or pets in a sealed vehicle for any length of time. Avoid outdoor areas void of shade.
