The Demopolis Police Department is reminding citizens that certain streets downtown will be closed for portions of the weekend due to Christmas on the River.
In preparation for COTR, the following streets will be closed beginning Friday at 4 p.m.:
•Walnut Avenue and Capitol Street
•Walnut Avenue and Franklin Street
•Washington Street and Strawberry Avenue
•Washington Street and Main Avenue
•Capitol Street and Main Avenue
•Main Avenue and Franklin Street
For the day parade on Saturday, the DPD is asking that no cars be parked along the parade route. Any cars parked along the route will be towed at the owner’s expense. Also, the flowing streets will be closed with barricades for the parade Saturday:
•Whitfield Street and Walnut Avenue
•Walnut Avenue to Capitol Street going North to South
•Capitol Street to Cedar Avenue
•Capitol Street and Strawberry Avenue
•Strawberry Avenue to Pettus Street
•Cedar Avenue to Walnut Avenue
Traffic will be allowed to flow east and west on other streets, but there will be no vehicle traffic on the parade route. At 10:45 a.m., the barricades allowing the east and west flow will cease, and no traffic will be allowed to cross the route. Once the parade has ended, the street closures will return to what was closed Friday afternoon.
During the night parade, there will be no parking on Commissioners Avenue from the Demopolis Civic Center to Childers Street.
