Santa Claus won’t be the only celebrity in attendance at the 43rd annual Christmas on the River.
Former University of Alabama standout David Palmer will also be in attendance.
Palmer, maybe better known as “The Deuce,” will be attending Braxton Adult Daycare’s first ever Christmas Open House on Saturday, Dec. 6. The event is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Palmer will greet guests from noon to 2 p.m.
Palmer, a Birmingham native, starred for the Crimson Tide from 1991-1993 and finished third in the voting for the Heisman Trophy in 1992. Following his junior season, Palmer was recognized as a consensus first-team All-American. In 1992, he helped Alabama capture the national championship.
Former Alabama coach Gene Stallings once described Palmer as “lightning in a bottle.”
The Bama speedster did it all for the Tide.
He caught 102 passes in three seasons for 1,611 yards, a 15.8-yard average per catch, with 11 touchdowns.
He rushed 86 times for 598 yards and a touchdown, averaging 7 yards per carry.
He completed 15 of 20 passes for 260 yards, an average of 13 yards per catch, with two touchdowns and three interceptions. He returned 83 punts for 865 yards and four touchdowns and ran back 36 kickoffs for 841 yards.
Palmer elected not to return to Alabama for his senior season and was drafted in the second round of the NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings.
After seven seasons in the NFL, he retired and returned to Birmingham where he serves as an assistant football coach and baseball coach for Parker High School.
Braxton Adult Daycare is a non-profit organization open to adults 18 and older with mental or physical disabilities.
It is located at 307 South Cherry Ave., in Demopolis.
