UWF sweeps West Alabama softball

West Florida pieced together 12 hits through five innings to defeat West Alabama 10-2 in game three of the Gulf South Conference series on Saturday.

The win completes the sweep for the Argonauts and improves their record to 26-19 overall, 15-11 in the GSC. West Alabama slipped to 24-21 and 11-14.

Danielle Sanders and Hannah Dowling each accounted for three hits in their three at-bats. Sanders led UWF with three runs while Dowling led with four runs batted in. Lead-off hitter Caroline Kaston added two more hits in her three at-bats as well as two runs and two RBI.

UWA was held scoreless until the fourth inning when Miriah Chavez brought in Lydia North on a sacrifice fly. Down nine runs in the fifth, the Tigers fought battled back with three hits to load the bases. Rebecca Schick walked to send in Anna Shartzer to add one more run in the inning.

Schick ended 2-for-2, while Shartzer, North and Whitney Brown each contributed a hit.

Taylor Bailey (15-8) took the win allowing five hits, one earned run and striking out four through five innings. Sarah Ray-Averett (7-8) gave up six runs on eight hits through the first inning and half to get the loss.

The Tigers will return to the UWA Softball Complex on Tuesday to wrap up its 2014 home schedule against Miles College in doubleheader action beginning at 4 p.m.
