Demopolis High School’s boys and girls tennis teams earned a trip to the state tournament in Mobile with second-place finishes at the section meets this week.
For the boys, this will be the seventh year in a row the team has made the state tournament. The girls, however, haven’t made it to state in several years.
Head coach Clay Massey said he’s proud of the way his teams are competing.
“Both teams played well this season, and they’re playing their best tennis of the year right now,” he said. “Making it to state is a great accomplishment, especially for the boys this year with three first-year players. That’s a big deal for them.”
Massey said the goal for the girls team coming into the season was to make the state tournament.
“They worked hard all year and got to where they wanted to be,” he said.
In the Class 5A, Section 5 tournament Wednesday, the boys team finished second behind Walker High School.
The doubles team of Garrett Miller and Jacob Browder finished second in their bracket to Walker’s No. 2 doubles team.
In the singles matches, Kyle Woodruff, Miller and Rodney Skidmore all finished second to Walker players. Walker won each of the boys brackets except for the No. 6 seed singles match.
The boys team finished second, just one point ahead of Chilton County.
On the girls side, the Demopolis doubles team of Anna Ezell and Lauren Boone finished second to Walker’s No. 3 seed doubles team. In singles, Sarah Culpepper and Ezell finished second to Walker’s No. 2 and No. 3 seeds, respectively.
In total, the girls finished with 25 points in the tournament behind 74 for Walker.
The state tournament will take place in Mobile at the Mobile Tennis Complex on Thursday and Friday, April 24-25.
