After falling behind 4-1, the 25th-ranked West Alabama men’s tennis team came roaring back to defeat No. 32 Florida Southern, 5-4, Thursday at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.
The win extends West Alabama’s winning streak to 15 matches and improves the Tigers to 19-1. Florida Southern saw its win streak snapped at five matches and dropped to 8-7.
Florida Southern won all three doubles matches before Anton Ivanov got the Tigers in the win column by defeating Benoit Paradis 6-1, 6-2 in No. 2 singles. Carl Lundberg defeated Caspar Schuetze in No. 4 singles 6-0, 6-1 to give the Mocs what seemed like an insurmountable advantage.
West Alabama then went to work, winning the final four singles matches to take the match. After winning the first set 6-4, No. 18 Nestor Vargas battled Florida Southern’s Emanuel Lueber back and forth in No. 1 singles before finally taking a 7-5 win in the second set to secure West Alabama’s victory.
Ranked No. 7 in the NCAA South Region, West Alabama completes its spring break trip at Georgia College on Friday. In addition to its current 15-match win streak, West Alabama is also 12-0 combined in road and neutral site venues this season.
