UWA softball sweeps Stillman in double header

West Alabama softball totaled 23 hits and held Stillman to six hits in a doubleheader sweep at Lady Tiger Field on Tuesday. UWA posted 12 hits in game one to win 8-2 and 11 in game two to win 8-0.
West Alabama improved to 17-15 overall, while Stillman fell to a three game losing skid and 11-19.
“It was an overall great team effort,” said UWA head coach Will Atkinson.
“The offense got off to a slow start in both games, but settled in as the game went on. We played great all around today. It was great to pick up a doubleheader sweep on the road. I thought we had a really solid effort all around today in the circle. All four pitchers commanded the strike zone and gave the defense a chance to win the ball games.”
In game one, Anna Shartzer put the Tigers ahead 2-0, scoring on a pass ball in the first inning and a home run in the top of the fifth for her ninth of the season. Shartzer ended 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs.
UWA strung together six straight hits with two outs in the top of the seventh to build the lead to 8-0. Jordyn Whiddon and Rebecca Schick each tallied RBI doubles, with Whiddon bringing in two runs. Whitney Brown, Lydia North and Randa Simpson each added RBI singles.
Stillman got on the board for the first time with two runs in the bottom of the seventh on a walk with the bases loaded and a fielder’s choice.
Jessica Brock (3-3) opened the first four innings striking out five batters, allowing only one hit and no runs to get the win. Alli Hall closed the final three innings to pick up the first Tiger save of the season. Hall matched her season high of four strikeouts and gave up two runs on two hits. Ashley Savage (8-10) took the loss allowing seven earned runs through seven innings.
Five Tigers recorded multiple base hits in game two. Whiddon jumped started the offense with an RBI double in the top of the first. Devan Hines followed up with an RBI single in the fourth and Chavez and North with doubles in the fifth. Chavez’s double brought in one run.
Brown hit her eighth homerun of the season in the fifth inning that added two more runs. Schick capped the Tiger scoring with a three run double in the sixth.
Whiddon led game two 3-for-4 at the platewith two runs. North led with three runs.
Skylar Davis (3-3) pitched the shutout through five innings striking out a season high of six batters and allowing only three hits. Taylor Tucker closed the sixth inning to complete the shutout. Chelsea Nix (3-7) pitched through all six innings giving up eight runs on 11 hits to take the loss.
West Alabama will have a week off before returning to the road to take on Young Harris College in a doubleheader on March 27. Game one is set for 3 p.m. in Young Harris, Ga.
