The Demopolis Police Department wants to warn the public about a recent scam circulating around the city.
According to DPD Chief Tommie Reese, several individuals have received phone calls stating that they have won a Reader’s Digest contest or other contests. They are told the prize will be delivered to their residence once certain requirements are met.
The scam says in order to receive the prize a person has to go to CVS, get a Green Dot Money Pack Card and put money on the card to cover charges like shipping and taxes.
Reese said the only problem is that you won’t get a prize and your money will be long gone.
“I am asking our citizens to never give out personal information to anyone that you do not know or trust, and to never send money looking to get a prize or winnings that you have not entered to win,” Reese said.
Reese added that people are always looking for a get rich quick fix, but 99 percent of the time they end up empty handed.
