Latest library staff member hit with kids

Demopolis Public Library has a new friend for children to see when they visit.
The children’s library now has a pet guinea pig that helps give children an extra incentive to go to the library and read.
“She’s our star attraction this summer,” children’s librarian Kelley Tarpley said. “A lot of children have already come into the library to see her, and once they’re here, they take an interest in reading.”
The guinea pig was delivered to the library by River and Heath Buchanan, who she belonged to before, on Thursday, May 23.
“They were looking for someone to take it off their hands because the boy had lost interest in keeping it, and we volunteered to take it,” Tarpley said. “Many of the larger libraries have pets in the children’s section, and this just creates more excitement for the children to come here and read.”
Tarpley added that the library has wanted to get a pet for a few years now, but it just hasn’t worked out until now.
