Grand jury does not indict Armstead

A Marengo County grand jury did not indict County Commissioner Freddie Armstead Sr., and his son, Freddie Armstead Jr., on theft charges.
The grand jury returned a no bill Tuesday on the five counts of first-degree theft of property, meaning they found no probable cause to indict Armstead or his son.
In order to be indicted, 12 of the 18 grand jury members must vote to bring the case to trial.
The charges stem from vehicles that were taken from the Marengo County Sheriff’s impound lot.
Madison County District Attorney Robert Broussard handled the case after local DA Greg Griggers recused himself.
“In my opinion, with the case being two years old, all of the evidence was presented to us and the grand jury, so there would be no reason for it to return to the grand jury at a later date,” Broussard said.
Attempts to reach Armstead on Wednesday afternoon were unsuccessful.
