County unemployment falls to 7.8 percent

Marengo County’s unemployment dropped by 1.1 percent from March to April, according to numbers released Friday, May 17.
Marengo’s jobless rate now stands at 7.8 percent, down from 8.9 percent in March. April’s numbers represent 586 county residents out of work.
Statewide, unemployment dropped to 6.9 percent, down from 7.2 percent in March.
Counties with the lowest unemployment were Shelby at 4 percent, Lee at 4.9 percent and Blount at 5 percent.
Counties with the highest unemployment were Wilcox at 14.8 percent, Perry at 11.7 percent and Dallas at 11.4 percent.
