State track meets under way in Gulf Shores, Selma

The Demopolis, Linden, A.L. Johnson and Marengo High School track teams are spending the weekend at the AHSAA state track meets.
Demopolis is in Gulf Shores for the 4A-6A meet, and after day one, the Tigers have had one of their 12 athletes earn points. Rodney Harper finished sixth out of 22 runners in the 5A boys 400-meter dash with a time of 50.97 seconds. Demetrius Kemp finished eighth in the long jump with a distance of 20-02.75 feet, but only the top seven finishers earn points.
In the 1A-3A state meet in Selma, the Linden, A.L. Johnson and Marengo High School teams are competing.
The Linden boys had a good first day, earning 21 points, good enough for fifth overall heading into day two. The Marengo girls have earned six points as of the end of day one.
For Linden, Jamal Lewis placed third in the triple jump with a distance of 41-00.75 feet. Marquise Shelton placed fourth in the discus throw with a distance of 126 feet, 3 inches and Chris Rogers placed seventh in the discus throw with a distance of 105-09.
Kynard Craig placed fourth in the high jump with a jump of 5 feet, 10 inches.
The 4×800 relay team for the Patriots placed sixth with a time of 9:34.8.
The Marengo High School girls earned their six points from Keondra Bouler in the 1600-meter run. She placed third.
A.L. Johnson’s team and Linden’s girls are not yet on the scoreboard.
Both meets will be completed Saturday.
