West Alabama men’s tennis wins sixth straight

LIVINGSTON – After sweeping the doubles competition, the University of West Alabama men’s tennis team won five of six singles matches to notch its sixth consecutive match win, 8-1, over North Alabama Saturday at the Vaughn Tennis Complex. The UWA women lost to UNA, 5-4.
The Tigers are now 12-2 after winning six straight. The West Alabama women are 11-5. Both teams are host to Christian Brothers Sunday. Match time is 1 p.m.
Nester Vargas (6-4, 6-2), Anton Ivanov (6-4, 6-1), Honorio Fernandez (6-2, 6-2), Kike Ruiz (6-4, 6-1) and Adam Drysdale (6-3, 6-3) claimed No. 1 through No. 5 singles wins, respectively. Drysdale and Ivanov won No. 1 doubles (8-5), Vargas and Ruiz took No. 2 doubles (8-6), while Fernandez and Manuel Grossmann won No. 3 (9-7).
The women’s team got off to a fast start, winning two of three doubles matches. Helga Jeske and Shannon McEvoy won No. 2 doubles (8-3), while Emily Gerding and Dasha Popova (8-1) won No. 3 doubles. McEvoy (6-4, 6-4) and Popova (6-1, 6-0) won No. 5 and 6 singles, respectively.
