LIVINGSTON – Nikkia Jordan and Brittany Weathers of West Alabama have been voted as first-team All-Gulf South Conference selections by league coaches. The Tigers were the only team to have a pair of first-team selections.
“Nikkia and Brittany both played through a lot of adversity this season,” UWA head coach Craig Roden said. “It’s a tribute to what kind of players and people they are that the league coaches voted them to this honor.”
Jasmine Hammon of Alabama-Huntsville, Rhandi Ball of Delta State and Mekena Randle from North Alabama join Weathers and Jordan on the first team. Hammon was named the GSC player of the year, Chelsey Rhodes of Delta State the freshman of the year and UNA’s Terry Fowler the coach of the year.
Weathers led the league in scoring until the final week of the season, despite battling a nagging foot injury that caused her to miss parts or all of several games. The senior from Hattiesburg, Miss., averaged 17.9 points and 6.2 rebounds.
Jordan, a three-time GSC player of the week choice since the middle of January and the 2012 GSC Tournament MVP, averaged 19.5 points and 5.2 rebounds despite missing the first nine games of the season.
West Alabama (12-14) opens play in the 2013 GSC Tournament Friday at 2:30 p.m. against West Georgia (16-10) at the Pete Hanna Center in Birmingham.
