The Demopolis High School softball team won two of three games over the weekend at the Brookwood Bash.
After struggling earlier in the season in two of the region’s top tournaments against perennial powers such as Class 6A Vestavia Hills and Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa, DHS rallied to pick up wins over Bibb County and Paul Bryant Saturday before falling to Brookwood.
“I am real proud of how we went to work and bounced back in the Brookwood tournament over the weekend after being rained out twice last week and getting limited practice time due to the weather,” Demopolis coach Joey Browder said. “The girls really dug in and stepped up after getting beat up a bit in the two Tuscaloosa tournaments and showed what they are made of. If they will commit and continue to work hard and take the coaching they are getting, we can only hope for them to continue to improve and compete at a higher level.”
Demopolis beat Bibb County 1-0 in its first game of the day. Madison Laduron threw six shutout inning and struck out eight Lady Choctaws to anchor the Demopolis effort, scattering three hits and six walks along the way.
Laduron and Madison Bozeman each went 1-for-3 in the game. Danielle Tatum went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Sydney Colyar and Victoria Washburn each finished 1-for-2.
With the game still scoreless in the bottom of the sixth, Riley King reached on a fielder’s choice before scoring the game’s only run on an RBI single to left-center by Tatum.
The Demopolis win came as an adequate response to a 1-0 loss the Lady Tigers suffered at the hands of Bibb County just a few weeks ago.
Demopolis’ second game of the day saw the Lady Tigers trounce Paul Bryant 17-2. Tatum pitched all four innings of that win, striking out six, walking two and scattering two hits for the victory.
Demopolis ended the game in the bottom of the fourth when Laduron invoked the mercy rule by ripping a two-run walk-off home run.
Laduron finished the game with the round-tripper, a pair of singles and a walk. Bozeman had a pair of singles and scored two runs.
King had a double and two singles while scoring three runs. Raylee Eubanks had a double and two singles. Tatum singled and scored a run.
Sydney Colyar hit a grand slam off the center field scoreboard. Victoria Webb doubled and scored a run. Courtney Lawrence scored a run.
Victoria Washburn singled twice and scored a pair of runs and Zoe Lewis doubled and scored a run.
In their final game of the day, the Lady Tigers lost to Brookwood 3-1. Laduron surrendered one earned run over six innings of work while striking out three batters.
Laduron also helped account for the Lady Tigers’ lone run of the game when she tripled and gave way to courtesy runner Alexis Jones who later scored on a Eubanks single. King also singled in the game.
The Lady Tigers traveled to Jackson Tuesday night. As of press time, no information on that game was available. Demopolis is set to have its home opener against Sweet Water Thursday.
