Lieutenant Col. (USA, Ret.) John Hughes Young IV

Lieutenant Col. (USA, Ret.) John Hughes Young IV, 83, of Marion died Dec. 3. He was born to John Hughes Young III and Mary Curtis Wynne Young in Norfolk, Va. He attended public schools in Norfolk, earning degrees from the United States Military Academy at West Point, the University of Pennsylvania and took additional studies at the University of Freiburg in Germany.
He served for 21 years as an officer in the U.S. Army (Field Artillery), which included tours of duty in Germany, Korea and Vietnam.
He taught at West Point, the General Staff College in Leavenworth, Kan., at schools in Germany, and upon military retirement, taught at Marion Military Institute and Judson College, both in Marion.
Col. Young was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Ingetraud Elizabeth Foerster Young. He is survived by his wife, Irene Nohe Young, a son, Dr. Mark Young of Berlin, Germany and a sister, Cary Young Adams of Virginia Beach, Va.
He died in the Roman Catholic faith and was a longtime member of the Society of the Cincinnati.
Burial with military honors will be in the family plot at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk, Va on Jan. 16, 2012 at 11 a.m. A memorial service will be held at St. Leo’s Catholic Church in Demopolis on Jan. 19, 2012 at 9 a.m.
