After 40-plus years in the Marengo County Probate Judge’s office, Cindy Neilson is ready to call it a career.
Neilson, who has served as the county’s probate judge for the past 20 years, announced her intent to not seek re-election Tuesday afternoon.
“It is somewhat of a bittersweet decision, but I know the time has come to enjoy retirement with Claud and my family,” she said. “It has been an honor to have served as probate judge for 20-plus years and as chief clerk 20 years prior to taking office as probate judge.”
Neilson said she has enjoyed the opportunity to serve the county in the many different roles the job requires.
“Most people associate the office of probate judge with the renewal of vehicle registrations and drivers license, but the responsibilities go far beyond administrative duties,” she said. “In reality, the probate judge makes judicial decisions every day that change the course of people’s lives.
“Also, as chief election official, the responsibility of conducting honest and efficient elections commands utmost integrity. It is not a position to be taken lightly.”
Neilson’s term will expire January 2013. The primary election will be held March 2012.
“I have enjoyed being a part of Marengo County government over the past 40 years and will sorely miss the daily involvement with other county officials, my staff and of course the people who elected me to serve in this capacity.”
