Marengo County’s two Social Security contact stations will close at the end of this month, the latest victims of a sluggish economy.
Teresa Roberts, Field Office Assistant with the Selma Social Security Office said budget cuts have shuttered all but three contact stations statewide. Locally, the station at the Theo Ratliff Center in Demopolis and the Marengo County Courthouse in Linden will close June 30.
“The big push now is online,” Roberts said of an alternative to visiting the local offices. “Just about anything you can do at one of our stations, you can do online.”
Using online service at www.soucialsecurity.gov one can apply for Social Security benefits or Medicare; get a retirement benefit estimate; use a benefit planner to calculate retirement, disability and survivors benefits; change their address, telephone number or direct deposit information or request a replacement Medicare card.
Those without Internet services, Roberts said, could call the office at 1-800-772-1213 or vist the Selma office.
