Jefferson native Betsy Compton has been named Director of Public Relations for the University of West Alabama.
Compton, a 2002 graduate of Marengo Academy, previously served as public relations specialist for both the University and its Division of Educational Outreach, assumed her new duties April 1.
“It’s an honor for me to serve in this capacity at my alma mater,” Compton said. “My time at UWA has afforded me many wonderful experiences and opportunities for success, and I consider this my opportunity to give back to the University. I’m eager to put my passion for this institution to work at a higher level, promoting the University and its invaluable role throughout our region.”
Compton holds both a bachelor’s and master’s in English from UWA. Her responsibilities include internal and external public relations, including media relations, photography, Web content, event planning, social media, and publications such as UWA Today alumni magazine.
“With her experience promoting UWA, Betsy is the natural choice to head up the public relations office,” said Clemit Spruiell, vice president for institutional advancement.
“A two-time UWA graduate with deep roots in the Black Belt, she has a passion for the University and the region.
“I am pleased to support her in this new leadership role.”
Prior to joining the public relations staff, Compton served as the University’s graphic designer for two years. As an undergraduate, she was editor of the student newspaper and later, staff advisor. Compton is also an adjunct photography instructor for the Department of Languages and Literature.
