Democratic nominee Terri Sewell defeated Republican hopeful Don Chamberlain in what turned out to be a historic election to the United States House of Representatives.

Congresswoman-elect Sewell made history by becoming the first African American woman elected to Congress in Alabama history. Sewell will fill the seat being vacated by Artur Davis, who did not seek re-election to the position.

“We celebrate this politically historic moment in Alabama history with Terri Sewell. Her election exemplifies the American dream,” said Joe Turnham, Chairman of the Alabama Democratic Party. “Terri’s victory sends a clear message to all Alabamians that strong family values, a public education, faith and hard work can empower us all to reach our dreams.”
