Thomas Clyde “Tom” Merkle, age 84, of Demopolis passed away on May 18, 2010, at his home.
He was born on Aug. 29, 1925, to the late William Rex and Clara Hollingsworth Merkle in Lincoln, Ala.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Dr. Marvin Eugene Merkl, William Rex Merkle Jr. and Homer Luther Merkle.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Elizabeth Gauldin Merkle of Demopolis; a daughter, Becky Merkle (Dan) Scarborough of Auburn; two sisters, Annie Merle Powell of Birmingham and Ferris Gray Merkle of Dothan; two brothers, Dr. Morris Guy (Jean) Merkle of College State, Texas, and Dr. Bobby Charles Merkle of Faunsdale; two grandchildren, Thomas Merkle “Tom” (Veronica Flores) Scarborough of Pearland, Texas, and Don Porter “Bo” Scarborough Jr. of Auburn; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 21, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Chirch in Demopolis. The Rev. Brooks Barkley and the Rev. George McKee will officiate. Burial will follow at 4 p.m. at Auburn Memorial Park in Auburn. The Rev. Charles Cummings will officiate the burial service. Kirk Funeral Homes Demopolis Chapel is directing the services.
Active pallbearers are William Gantt, Mark Rose, Mark Dollar, Bill White, Mack Glover, Allen Wilkerson and Robert Owens. Honorary Pallbearers will be Gregg Heim, Earl Morgan, Ed Partridge, Miles Mayberry, Joe Capell, Billy Flowers, Greg Robertson and William Rankin.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the First Baptist Church of Demopolis, 109 S. Strawberry Ave., Demopolis, AL 36732; the Auburn United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 3135, Auburn, AL 36831; or the charity of one’s choice.
