Kiwanis Club collecting used cell phones

This Christmas, several people got new cell phones. The Demopolis Kiwanis Club is calling on people to donate their old cell phones in a fund-raising campaign to benefit the organization’s causes.
To take part in the campaign, donate an old cell phone by depositing it in a Kiwanis box found at the downtown branch of BankTrust, the downtown and Westside branches of Robertson Banking Company and the Demopolis Public Library. The boxes will be displayed with the Kiwanis International logo, and all cell phones will be accepted.
Hanging up your old cell phones will help the community make the call to the many Kiwanis causes, including local scholarships, support for youth projects through Key Club and others.
“We mail the cell phones to a particular place,” said Kiwanis member Rodney Allen. “They evaluate the phones and see what they’re worth, and mail us a check. They pay for the postage and everything for us. This company does this for community clubs and several different organizations. We just collect the phones and mail them to them.”
“The funds raised through this project will go into the Kiwanis local fund,” said Valley Harrison of BankTrust, a member of the Demopolis Kiwanis Club. “Children and their wellbeing is a main focus of Kiwanis, and the money we get through the sale of these phones will help with that.”
