The fire that destroyed a Faunsdale church Monday morning remains under investigation, but investigators thus far find it unlikely the fire was set intentionally to cover any break-in.
“The case remains open in should any new evidence turn up,” said Stephen Holmes, public information specialist for the Alabama Department of Insurance and State Fire Marshal’s Office. “Anything that may have been in the building to aid in the investigation was burned up, but the fire marshal has found no evidence of an accelerant, which typically would be used to intentionally start a fire.”
Holmes added that many clear indications of a break-in were not found at the scene.
“There was no sign of a break-in,” he said. “As an example, all of the sound equipment was still in the building. It was burned, but it was still there. A lot of other items that typically would have been taken in the event of a burglary were found on the scene by our investigators.”
The congregation of the First Baptist Church of Faunsdale intends to conduct services at City Hall in Uniontown Sunday.
