MONTGOMERY – Alabama Department of Transportation personnel and resources across the state are on standby to respond to icy bridge/road conditions and other adverse impacts as overnight temperatures are expected to fall into the teens during the next few days.

ALDOT personnel will monitor bridge/road conditions along with local authorities to determine what actions may be necessary. Resources including sand are on reserve and extra personnel will be on duty.

“We’re committed to keeping Alabama’s transportation network open and avoiding closures if at all possible should freezing conditions affect bridges/roads,” said ALDOT Director Joe McInnes. “We maintain a constant state of readiness to respond to any adverse weather conditions, and we will have resources and personnel standing by to keep state roads and bridges open if possible.”

One of the biggest issues, though, is how motorists react to the potential for more freezing conditions on Alabama’s roads and bridges, McInnes cautioned. Motorists are urged to use extreme caution, allow extra travel time, slow down near bridges and overpasses and other places where icy conditions may exist, allow extra distance between other vehicles and ensure their vehicles are in good operating order.
