The Demopolis City Council moved forward with a plan to repair the Jackson Street Bridge for the second time in three years.
The council awarded Alabama Bridge Builders the contract to complete the repairs at a price of $142,000.
The project should take 30 working days.
“We did this two years ago, and now there are different repairs,” council member Jack Cooley said. “If we do it one more time, we’ll have rebuilt the entire bridge.”
Cooley spoke in jest, but the repairs were an unexpected expense for a city trying to hold its own in difficult economic times.
But the quoted price of $3 million to replace the entire bridge is prohibitive, the council decided in another meeting.
“What we’re about to do is what wa recommended a couple of years ago,” council member Woody Collins said. “I feel comfortable with what we’re going to do.”
