DEMOPOLIS &8212; The Marengo County Disabled American Veterans chapter is looking to add another facet to their membership, an auxiliary chapter.
The group, which was revamped in 2004 but chartered in 2000, hopes to charter an auxiliary chapter, which is an extension of the group for spouses, surviving spouses, parents, siblings, children, grandparents, grandchildren and great grandchildren of veterans who were disabled or died in military service or who are DAV members. Margie Belcher has agreed to take on the job of temporary president while the group gets started.
In addition to herself, Jamie Alich will be the treasurer and her mother, Diane will be another charter member.
Belcher said the main function of the auxiliary is to assist in the duties of the DAV, including assisting with health fairs and fundraisers. Another essential part of the DAV and the auxiliary is to assist vets in getting benefits for those who need it most.
Another goal for the group once it is established is to get junior members involved, Belcher said. Given the large number of vets in the area, Belcher said the group could be an opportunity for many people.
