Heralded as much for his disposition as his athletic ability, Markelle Smith can now add Player of the Week honors to an already impressive resume.

Smith won his season-opening match 9-7 last week against a formidable opponent from the well-respected Selma program.

Regardless of whether or not he chooses to accept the mantle, Smith has clearly accepted its responsibilities.

According to Harris, the senior is the first player to practice each day and completes all drills and tasks with a pleasant attitude.

While Smith has no designs of playing at the next level, he does have goals for his final season.

Smith has played tennis since the seventh grade, taking last season off in favor of holding a job. He intends on accepting the academic scholarship offered him by UAB and is considering engineering.
