DEMOPOLIS &8212; After beginning formal practice at the end of January, the Demopolis High School tennis team held its first match against Selma High School Tuesday.
Although the Selma players won the
match overall, head coach Dana Hill said her team had a number of successes.
The way the match was set up, there were six seeds for singles play and three seeds for doubles. Whatever school wins at least five of those matches is the overall winner.
Just a few of the highlights from the Demopolis team include Annie Tucker winning her singles match, 9-7. Markelle Smith, a returning player and senior at DHS, won his singles match, 8-6. Neilson Renner, who is an eighth grader at Demopolis Middle School outplayed Selma&8217;s Bryan Allen, 9-6.
When asked what things she would like her players to improve on, Hill said all the players need to work on their footwork. She also hopes to work with the first-time players on their serves.
As far as the rest of the season, Hill said she is hopeful. Their next match will be in Meridian on March against Northeast High School.
Their next home match will be at on March 7 against Holy Spirit Catholic.
