Royal Leigh Pegues

MONTGOMERY &8212; Royal Leigh Pegues, 80, died Dec. 13, 2007, at Jackson Hospital in Montgomery. Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. on Sunday at Siloam Baptist Church in Marion with Kirk Funeral Homes Marion Chapel directing and the Rev. Chester Jernigan is officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior the service at the church. Interment will follow the service in the Marion City Cemetery.
Pegues was born on April 10, 1927 to Dr. and Mrs. C.L. Pegues in Marion.
Pegues was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Carolyn Pegues Bobo.
He survived by his wife, Martha Coney Pegues, to whom he was married for 57 years; and a daughter, Martha Pegues of Prattville; four sons, W. Leigh Pegues and wife, Tish, of Huntsville, John C. Pegues and wife, Marcia, of Hoover, Michael E. Pegues and wife, Barbara, of Montgomery, Christopher N. Pegues and wife, Jo Ann, of Huntsville; one sister, Elizabeth P. Hayes and husband, Ken, of Montgomery; 11 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.
He is an alumnae from Marion Military Institute in 1948 and the University of Alabama in 1950, he is a WWII Veteran, a former trustee at MMI and Judson College he was also the varsity coach at Marion Military.
Pegues was a two-term Mayor of Marion in the 60s. He was the business manager at Judson College in Marion for many decades. From 1975-1983, he was the state legislator for the 86th district including, Dallas County, Marengo County and Perry County, and was the director of ADEM, Emeritus Trustee at the University of West Alabama.
