City should help fund fireworks extravaganza

The realization that Freedom on the River may be minus its fireworks extravaganza is a bit of odd news.
Who has a 4th of July celebration without fireworks?
But going without fireworks is not something the Demopolis-Area Chamber of Commerce wants to do. The reality is that the price is going up, and they are not sure they can cover the additional $2,000.
That is why they are hoping the City of Demopolis will step up and help out.
We understand the city&8217;s reasoning for not coming up the money. They wanted to give city employees raises.
But we are hoping they are not being short-sighted. Celebrations like Christmas on the River and Freedom on the River bring in a lot of visitors to Demopolis. And those visitors spend money, which includes tax dollars that go to the city.
We think the city should look hard for the additional revenue and help cover the shortfall.
