LINDEN &8212; After dropping their first game of the season against South Choctaw 38-33 last Friday, the Marengo Academy varsity girl&8217;s team went on the road looking to right the ship before it sailed too far off course.
The day ended with the Lady Horns on top 42-40, but the victory to put the team over .500 and at 2-1 on a season consisting solely of road games thus far didn&8217;t come without quite a bit of adversity.
The Lady Horns came out the gate a little soft in the early game and let the Pickens Pirates get a cushion most teams could have rode to the finish. The &8217;Horns trailed 14-2 at the end of the first quarter and, at their lowest point of the game, were behind by 14 in the early going of the second quarter.
The Lady Horns found their gumption in the second quarter though, and the group began a tenacious battle to catch up with the Pirates. By the end of the first half of play the Longhorns had cut the pirate lead from 14 to a mere four points.
Out of the locker room the Lady Horns again struggled early, allowing the Pirates to build a cushion and pull away. At the end of the third Pickens was up by eight and the score was 32-24.
In the fourth quarter the Marengo defense exhibited its best effort of the game, holding the Pirates to only eight points, while the offense scored its first half total in the final quarter to complete the hard fought comeback.
Leading scorers for the Lady Longhorns were Abbey Huckabee, with 18 points, and Anna Edmonds and Amber Walker, who both posted eight.
