DEMOPOLIS &8212; Each year, the local March of Dimes picks an ambassador child to represent their organization. This year twin girls, Brianna Michelle and Britney Nicole Conwell, were chosen as the 2007 ambassador children.
Brianna and Britney were born to Jerry and Shenita Conwell of Demopolis on Sept. 26, 2007, at only 34 weeks. Brianna weighed 4 pounds, 5 ounces, and Britney weighed 3 pounds, 12 ounces.
According to Shenita, during the pregnancy she developed what is called twin-to-twin transfusion, where one baby gets more blood supply than the other.
Because of the complication, Shenita said Britney was very anemic and very pale in color. Her other daughter, Brianna, was &8220;red as a beet.&8221;
After the twins were born, they stayed in the hospital for several weeks.
Even though Britney was the smaller one, she came home two weeks before Brianna did. Britney came home on Oct. 24, 2006, and Brianna came home on Nov. 4, 2006, two days before their actual due date.
According to Shenita, the twins are doing fine. They have gained weight and play with their brother Jeremy often.
The twins will be honored as part of the March of Dimes Walk-America event this Saturday at the Demopolis Sports Plex, which begins at 9 a.m.
