MAPLESVILLE &8212; Even against the best of competition, it was no competition.
Defending Class 1A champion Sweet Water began its title defense in convincing fashion last night with jamboree wins against preseason No. 2 Brantley, 14-0, and No. 4 Maplesville, 20-14.
Sweet Water took the field first against Brantley after the other set of Bulldogs had beaten host Maplesville 13-7.
Sweet Water forced a three-and-out before marching methodically down the field for a touchdown and extra point to make it 7-0.
Anthony Landrum capped off the 10-play, 68-yard drive with the score from two yards out, and the Bulldogs never looked back.
Another three-and-out was then forced by the Sweet Water defense. This time it was Bulldog quarterback Drew Luker finding Antonio Landrum from 23 yards out. The extra point made it 14-0 Sweet Water, which would be the final.
In a rematch from last year’s semifinal playoff round, Sweet Water beat Maplesville 20-14.
The Red Devils gave the champs their tightest contest of last year’s playoffs in the semifinal round (also at Maplesville), but the Bulldogs came out on top again.
